Time for a monthly update slightly ahead of April, but not much. Last week wrapped up the “winter” season, and on we move into the “green season. Green is right – lots of Spring weather forecast for this first week of April, which is putting the (growth) spurs to the seedlings.

The “Sora” radishes are in great shape, in fact it is time to start more outside. The Japanese Salad Turnips are just starting to add some bulb size, but there are really good greens probably 8-10″ tall. The winter season has been getting a handful each week.

New this year is a nice new set of herbs – The Sage is doing great, in fact Green Season members who want a few leaves will be offered them. Rosemary and Parsley are still developing, and oddly enough some Fennel is starting to show some growth. The major crop for Green season, however, is lettuces with Arugula and Mustard. The warmer season new plants like onions will show up in the second half of Green Season, but for now there are just holdovers from outside.

This is Cegolaine from a week ago – everything is growing fast right now. The cabbages and other brassica will be set out this first week of April, and will be ready for the second half of Green Season. Our early cabbage is a 55 day crop, and it is on track for 4-5 weeks from now assuming transplant and feeding go well.

It is pretty evident that CSA membership will be substantially lower this year. Looking for reasons isn’t important at this stage. The plan here is to go ahead with the planting schedule, and if needed donate into a church program of “free groceries” if membership is still low. The number of tomato starts is immense, and that is easy to package and move to there. Likewise with Potatoes, etc. It’s all good.

Meanwhile, lots of seeds to start this week. Squash and melons get started end of April with an early set-out – there will be a pumpkin patch to go with the normal winter squash, mostly because the pumpkin seed part of the nursery catalog enticed us with cool french pumpkins… Green season signup ends Wednesday, April 2…
